The tests is based on the technique of precipitation and identification of immune complexes (IC). IC are antibodies of IgM or IgG class, connected with antigen and present in the organism of a patient infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. The test procedure brakes the bound between antibodies and antigens and allows to detect them with western blot method.

Presence of immune complexes  during exposure to a large amount of Borrelia burgdorferi antigens is a natural phenomenon for antibodies. This may however be a reason for acquiring false negative results with infected people, while there is low access for serological tests to detect antibodies bound in immune complexes. Marking the presence of antibodies after precipitation of  immune complexes  allows more effective detection of antibodies with IgM or IgG class Western blot test and identifying active borreliosis. It should be indicated that this method facilitates marking only those antibodies, which were connected with the antigen. That is why this test is recommended only for patients with confirmed negative results for the presence of antibodies.
